About Me

My interest in the lives of women, families, and children in 19th and 20th century America stems from my childhood reading, including Louisa May Alcott's Little Women series, Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House on the Prairie series, and Lucy Maud Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables series.

I rediscovered my passion for history in graduate school and now share it with my students at the University of Montana, where I have taught since 1995. I also enjoy sharing my work with a wide audience, whether this is by writing op-eds or by working as a historical consultant.
